Not a hotter PLA — a tougher one
Polymaker has quietly replaced its long-running HT-PLA with a new formulation called HT-PLA Pro, and the name is a little misleading. Despite the "HT" badge, this is not a higher-temperature PLA aimed at annealing or heat-deflection records. The meaningful upgrades are mechanical: noticeably improved toughness and, more importantly, significantly better layer adhesion than the original HT-PLA.
Why layer adhesion matters
Standard PLA is famously brittle along the Z axis. Print a part with load applied across the layers and it can split like a stacked deck of cards. The original HT-PLA improved on that, but the Pro version pushes inter-layer bonding further — which is exactly where functional prints tend to fail. For jigs, fixtures, enclosures, and brackets that see real stress, better layer adhesion translates directly into parts that don't crack under load.
What EDGE OF 3D found
In a recent hands-on test, EDGE OF 3D put HT-PLA Pro through layer-adhesion and toughness comparisons against the outgoing material. The headline result: layer adhesion is genuinely better, not just marketing copy. The filament prints much like ordinary PLA — same temperatures, same speeds, same bed behavior — so the upgrade comes essentially for free if you were already running HT-PLA.
Who should buy it
If your prints are decorative, standard PLA is still the value pick. But if you print functional parts that need to survive drops, clamping, or sustained load, HT-PLA Pro is a sensible default. It keeps PLA's easy printing while closing the gap toward tougher engineering materials — without the enclosure and drying hassle of PETG or ABS.
The bottom line: Polymaker didn't reinvent HT-PLA as a heat-resistant filament. It made it tougher where it counts, and that's a more useful upgrade for most makers.
