PrusaSlicer 3.0 is not an incremental update, it is a full rewrite with a new UI, faster slicing, multi-tool profiles, and an offline mode for defense and aerospace users.

Not a refresh, a rebuild

Prusa Research released the first public preview of PrusaSlicer 3.0 on September 1, 2026, exactly 15 years after the first Slic3r commit. The team did not move the furniture around. They tore the house down and built a new one. The Alpha version tested for this review opens instantly, slices large models noticeably faster, and feels like an entirely different application.

The new UI uses a cleaner layout with a light mode that is easy on the eyes. Important settings live in a right-hand panel that is easier to read than the old interface. Switching between printers, filaments, and projects no longer feels like navigating a maze.

Multi-tool and multi-plate workflows

Modern printers keep adding nozzles, tool heads, and materials. PrusaSlicer 3.0 catches up by letting each bed carry its own full configuration. You can keep multiple projects open in one window and slice across different machines side by side. Profiles now support multi-tool setups properly: different nozzles, diameters, and materials per tool in the same machine profile.

A plugin marketplace joins the feature set. Developers can write custom extensions, and Prusa will vet submissions before they appear in the store. The system is designed so plugins have no access to data outside the loaded project.

True offline mode

For defense contractors, aerospace firms, and anyone working in an airgapped environment, PrusaSlicer 3.0 introduces a true offline mode. In this mode, the networking libraries are not loaded at all. No background connections, no firewall alarms, no phone-home behavior. You can also selectively disable Connect, Printables, and profile update checks without switching to full offline mode.

Speed and stability

Slicing the same articulated dragon model on the stock profile took 24.5 seconds in PrusaSlicer 2.9.6. The 3.0 preview finished in 17.8 seconds. Startup time dropped from a get-a-coffee wait to instant. Continuous autosave protects work in progress across multiple open projects.

The 3D viewport got a graphics upgrade with shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion that make it easier to judge how objects sit on the bed. Pin your most-used parameters to the right panel instead of digging through menus.

What is still missing

This is an early preview, not a near-production alpha. Some features from 2.9.x have not yet been ported and will arrive in 3.1.0. Projects from older versions open fine, but expect rough edges. PrusaSlicer 3.0 installs into a separate directory, so you can run it alongside 2.x without breaking your existing workflow.

The bottom line

PrusaSlicer 3.0 is the biggest update in the program's history, and it earns that claim. The speed gains are immediately noticeable, the UI is genuinely better, and the offline mode removes a long-standing pain point for institutional users. If you run multiple printers or complex multi-tool machines, this preview is already more useful than the current stable release. Wait for 3.1.0 if you need every feature from 2.9.x, but do not sleep on this one.
