RIC Robotics and K4k Construction just delivered Sacramento's first permitted 3D-printed building, a 1,200 sq ft ADU walled in just 12 days.
From Experiment to Permitted Build
Additive construction has spent years flirting with the mainstream. This week it took a concrete step closer. RIC Robotics, the Denver-based additive construction (AC) specialist, teamed up with Sacramento's K4k Construction to complete what is being described as the first permitted 3D-printed building in California's capital city.
The project is a 1,200 square foot accessory dwelling unit (ADU). According to RIC, K4k completed the wall system for the home in just 12 days — a timeline that underscores why ADUs have become one of the most compelling near-term use cases for concrete printing.
Why an ADU, and Why Sacramento?
The build sits on property owned by K4k's founder and CEO, David Gonzalez, and his wife Estelle, an engineer at the company. The home is destined for Estelle's parents. Building for their own family, Gonzalez said, was about “proving that innovative technology can deliver high-quality, code-compliant housing while helping address some of the biggest challenges facing our industry.”
Location matters as much as the technology. By planting the project in Sacramento — the state capital — K4k maximizes its visibility to lawmakers at precisely the moment California is wrestling with affordable-housing policy. A permitted build is a precedent: it gives legislators a validated, code-compliant design they can reference when aligning state rules with federal housing initiatives.
A Pattern, Not a One-Off
This is not RIC Robotics' first rodeo. In 2024 the company completed an ADU in Walnut, California that was widely credited as an industry first. The Sacramento project is at least the second 3D-printed ADU in the state.
More importantly, RIC is scaling beyond single structures. The firm recently began work on a community in Colorado that will include dozens of 3D-printed homes — what it calls the first standalone metro district built with the latest generation of advanced construction tech. RIC's hardware is also behind Alquist's collaboration with Walmart, extending its footprint from custom homes to large retail supply chains.

The 3D-printed housing sector has no shortage of eye-catching renders and pilot programs. What it has lacked is a repeatable, permitting-approved template that de-risks the next project. Sacramento's first permitted build supplies exactly that — and it arrives as rivals like ICON pursue their own reinventions. Different technologies, different business models, and a genuine proof of commercial viability is precisely what the construction industry needs right now.
For makers and builders watching the space, the takeaway is simple: the barrier is no longer “can we print a house” — it's “can we permit, repeat, and scale it.” Sacramento just moved that line forward.
