Rocket Lab has established a German legal entity to manufacture satellites and components locally, giving European defense and institutional customers a domestic alternative to imported spacecraft.

The Move

Rocket Lab has formally launched Rocket Lab Germany GmbH, creating a local legal and manufacturing footprint inside Europe. The subsidiary gives the company a direct presence for satellite, payload, and component production on the continent, and it positions Rocket Lab to compete for European institutional and defense contracts without exporting finished hardware from New Zealand or the United States.

Why Germany

The choice of Germany reflects more than just favorable business conditions. Rocket Lab completed its acquisition of Mynaric in April, paying $155.3 million in cash and shares for the laser communications company. Mynaric was already a Rocket Lab subcontractor, supplying CONDOR Mk3 optical terminals for prime contracts worth $1.3 billion. The existing supplier relationship gave Rocket Lab insight into Mynaric's production capabilities and where efficiencies could be found.

By folding Mynaric into a German subsidiary, Rocket Lab gains an established Munich-based team, existing supplier relationships, and a recognized European legal entity. That matters for defense and space contracts, where customers often require local manufacturing and data sovereignty.

European Context

Rocket Lab is not alone in reshoring space manufacturing. ESA's In-orbit Manufacturing Accelerator has already backed European 3D printing companies like Photocentric and DCUBED toward flight-ready capability. Within that same program, Skyrora qualified an updated 70kN rocket engine built with its own 3D printers at a UK test site, cutting production time by 66 percent and cost by 20 percent.

Rocket Lab's Munich entity extends that pattern from launch vehicles into satellite production itself. The company is embedding directly into the customer base it wants to serve rather than expecting European agencies to buy American or Antipodean-built hardware.

What This Changes

For European satellite operators and defense agencies, a local Rocket Lab presence means shorter supply chains and easier compliance with data and technology transfer rules. For the broader 3D printing industry, it signals that additive manufacturing is now mature enough to serve as the production backbone for sovereign space programs, not just a prototyping tool.

Rocket Lab says the German subsidiary will produce Electron and Neutron launch components alongside satellite hardware. The exact production roadmap will emerge over the next year, but the legal vehicle is now in place.
