Researchers at Newcastle University scanned a fractured Roman game board from Vindolanda and 3D printed a playable replica for museum visitors.

A board lost for nearly two thousand years

In 2019, archaeologists at Vindolanda pulled a stone board from the ground. The site, a Roman fort near Hadrian's Wall, was occupied from roughly 85 CE to 200 CE. The stone was cracked into five pieces and had later been reused as a flagstone. Underneath the wear, it was a game board for Ludus Latrunculorum, one of Roman Britain's favorite pastimes.

From scan to playable replica

Researchers at Newcastle University took a handheld Artec 3D Spider scanner to each fragment and built a virtual model of the whole board. From there they 3D printed a replica in PLA that people can actually play on.

That matters because the original is fragile and often on loan. Sophie Westlake, who handles activities and diversity at the Vindolanda Trust, said the replica and a 3D interactive model give visitors a tactile, engaging way to meet the past while the real artifact travels.

Who played, and how

The board turned up outside the fort walls, which tells us the game was not just for soldiers. Women and children likely played it too. No rulebook survives, but historians think Ludus Latrunculorum played like checkers: two sides try to trap the opponent's pieces between their own.

If you want to see it, the Roman Army Museum near Vindolanda has the original on display. The printed copy turns a static excavation into something you can pick up.

Why this story sticks

This is 3D printing doing quiet, useful work. No rocket parts, no hype, just a 1,900 year old game made playable again. It is a good reminder that the same printer on your desk can also keep history in people's hands.
