Suzhou-based Rongsu Technology raised $14.9 million and immediately launched SnowX, a sub-brand that will build desktop metal 3D printers for consumers.

A Metal AM Company Bets on the Desktop

Rongsu Technology is not a startup playing with prototypes. The Suzhou-based firm builds wire-feed directed energy deposition systems for aerospace, steel, and petrochemical clients. It also runs its own VEAM multi-laser coaxial wire feeding technology, which is a mouthful but essentially means it can lay down metal fast and accurately.

Now Rongsu wants to bring that capability to your desk. The company closed a Series A+ round worth roughly 100 million yuan, about $14.9 million, with Kunlun Capital investing alone. At the same time, it announced SnowX, a consumer sub-brand that will target desktop metal 3D printers.

What SnowX Actually Is

Details are thin. No product specifications, no ship date, no price. What we know is that Rongsu founder Xu Fangda, a post-doctoral researcher from the University of Bath, started the company in 2020 to focus on large-scale additive manufacturing. The SnowX pivot suggests Rongsu sees a gap between industrial metal AM and the consumer market.

The consumer metal 3D printing space is still mostly empty. Desktop Metal tried and stumbled. Markforged went industrial. The few machines that do exist are either too expensive, too limited in material, or too complex for a home user. If SnowX can deliver a wire-fed metal printer that works at a consumer price point, it would be genuinely new territory.

Why Wire Feeding Matters

Most desktop metal printers use powder bed fusion, which requires handling fine metal powder, inert gas, and post-processing. Wire-feed systems are different. They use metal wire, similar to what welders use, and melt it with a laser or arc. That makes them safer, cheaper to run, and easier to maintain. The tradeoff has been resolution and surface finish, but Rongsu's VEAM technology with multiple lasers could close that gap.

The Bigger Picture

China's metal AM industry is growing fast. Rongsu is one of several companies pushing wire-feed technology into new markets. The fact that a Kunlun Capital backed it with $14.9 million suggests investors see consumer metal printing as a real opportunity, not a science project.

We will know more when SnowX shows its first product. For now, it is one to watch.
