A metal printer for the price of a used car

Metal 3D printing has lived behind a glass wall for years. The machines that fuse stainless steel or titanium into real parts cost six figures, need argon atmospheres, and ask for a trained operator. A startup called ScrapLabs is betting that wall is ready to come down.

The company showed its platform at the 3D Printing Nerd booth and on a tour led by maker ScrapLabs, where the pitch is simple: laser powder bed fusion that skips the binders, the sintering furnaces, and the post-processing tumblers. Feed metal powder in, pull a dense metal part out. Founder kits start at $9,600.

What they are actually building

ScrapLabs says its system is a laser powder bed fusion machine built to be compact and benchtop friendly. The headline numbers are a claimed 99% part density and printed 316L stainless steel samples. The roadmap runs from a late 2025 proof of concept through alpha testers in mid 2026, with beta planned for December 2026 and a production launch targeted for June 2027, starting in the US.

There is no vendor lock-in on materials or consumables, which matters. Most affordable entries into a new manufacturing category fail because the parts and powder are controlled by one seller. ScrapLabs is selling machines, material, and accessories directly through its own site.

Why it matters

For a long time, metal printing was something you outsourced. If you wanted a bracket, a jig, or a replacement fitting in steel, you sent a file to a service bureau and waited. A sub-$10,000 machine that sits in a lab, a classroom, or a small shop changes who gets to prototype in metal at all.

The catch is maturity. ScrapLabs is still in alpha, the specs are targets, and the company itself says details may change. We have seen compact metal printers promise the moon before. The difference this time is the price floor and the direct-sale model, both of which lower the risk of trying one.

Should you want a metal printer?

The YouTube coverage asks the honest question: do you really want one? Metal printing brings powder handling, a laser, and real safety considerations that filament printing never does. For most hobbyists the answer is still no. For small manufacturers, engineering programs, and repair shops, a machine at this price is worth a close look.

ScrapLabs is taking deposits and running a free waitlist now. If the 2027 launch holds, it will be one of the cheapest paths into real metal parts that exists.
