The Vikram-1's fourth stage runs on a cluster of Raman-1 engines. These are liquid-propellant engines produced using metal additive manufacturing. Skyroot built the combustion chambers and other engine components in-house, which is the real story here. A 3D printed engine that reaches orbit is no longer a research curiosity. It is a production part that survived launch, vacuum restart, and precise multi-orbit payload placement.

Why 3D Printing Matters for Rocket Engines

Traditional rocket engine production ties your launch cadence to a supply chain of forgings, welders, and inspection cycles. If one nozzle needs to be re-machined, the schedule slips. Skyroot's approach removes that bottleneck. The company can iterate on engine geometry, print a new version, and test it without waiting for a foundry slot.

The Raman-1 cluster on Vikram-1's Orbital Adjustment Module is also restartable in vacuum. That capability let Skyroot place six payloads into different orbits during a single flight. Additive manufacturing made that level of mission flexibility economically viable at a small-company scale.

What Comes Next

Vikram-2 is already in development. It trades the solid-and-printed-liquid combination for an advanced cryogenic engine and scales payload capacity to roughly 900 kg to low Earth orbit. Skyroot plans to keep the same carbon-composite airframe and rideshare flexibility that made Vikram-1 attractive to small-satellite operators.

The bigger signal is in the market. If a private Indian company can reach orbit with a 3D printed engine on a debut flight, the technical barrier for new launch providers has dropped sharply. Expect more engine startups to skip traditional manufacturing entirely.
