Skyroot's Vikram-1 reached orbit on July 18, and its fourth stage is powered by 3D printed Raman-1 engines built in days, not months.

India's first private ride to orbit

On July 18, 2026, Skyroot Aerospace launched Vikram-1 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota. The rocket reached a 450 kilometer low Earth orbit sixteen minutes after liftoff and deployed six payloads. The mission, named Aagman, made the Hyderabad company the first private Indian outfit to reach orbit.

That detail matters because it puts India in a small club. The United States and China already had private firms reach orbit. India now joins them, and a homegrown startup did the work rather than a state agency.

The engine is the story

Vikram-1 is a four stage small satellite launcher. Three solid fuel stages sit ahead of a liquid propellant upper stage called the Orbital Adjustment Module. That final stage runs on a cluster of 3D printed Raman-1 engines that can restart in a vacuum, letting the rocket place payloads across multiple orbits with precision.

Skyroot calls it India's first fully 3D printed orbital engine. The shift from cast and machined parts to printed metal cuts build time from months to days per unit. All3DP reported the printed engine comes in about 50 percent lighter than a conventional one, which is a real advantage when every gram costs fuel.

Why printing the engine changes the business

Skyroot pairs the printed engine with a carbon composite airframe and modular avionics. The company is aiming at the small satellite market, where operators want dedicated launches on their own schedule instead of splitting a ride on a bigger rocket.

Speed is the selling point. If you can print an engine in days, you can keep a production line moving. Skyroot says its Hyderabad factory can build one rocket per month, and a second test flight is planned before commercial service starts next year.

From ISRO engineers to a billion dollar startup

Skyroot was founded in 2018 by Pawan Kumar Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, both former ISRO engineers. They reached a private suborbital flight with Vikram-S in 2022, then the orbital debut this month. Earlier this year the company became India's first space tech unicorn at a 1.1 billion dollar valuation.

The payloads on this flight mixed science with symbolism. There was a robotic arm built to grab space debris and an Earth observation camera. There was also a lab grown diamond lotus and a gold rocket carrying micro sculptures of Indian space pioneers Vikram Sarabhai, C.V. Raman, and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

What comes next

One successful flight is not a business, but it is the hard part cleared. The real test is whether Skyroot can turn a printed engine and a monthly build rate into regular commercial launches. If it does, India gets a private launch option that did not exist a week ago.
