Free CC0 fossil scans from the Smithsonian are letting makers print full-scale dinosaur skeletons at home. One Reddit user spent 1,773 hours on a Triceratops skull alone.

The Smithsonian's 3D scanning program has quietly built one of the largest free fossil libraries on the internet. All of it is CC0 - public domain - and makers are turning those scans into full-scale dinosaur skeletons in their garages.

From museum archive to printer bed

In July 2026, Reddit user Content-Weird-8057 posted photos of a completed life-sized Triceratops skull. The print measures 6.5 feet from snout to frill. The frill alone is 8.5 feet wide. The entire build required 1,773 printer hours spread across three Qidi Xmax printers. It split into 120 separate parts that were later solvent-welded together using ABS.

The maker also completed a full-size T.rex and a Utahraptor. Both are currently on display at Red Cliffs Mall in St. George, Utah.

Where to get the files

The scans live at Smithsonian 3D (3d.si.edu). The catalog includes everything from hominid skulls to marine reptiles. Most models are already cleaned into printable meshes, which eliminates the point-cloud cleanup work that used to eat up days of effort.

What it actually takes

Printing a life-sized dinosaur is not a weekend project. The Triceratops skull needed careful split planning just to fit through standard doors. The halves are removable, which made transport possible. ABS was chosen specifically because it dissolves in acetone, making solvent welding practical for joining so many large parts.

The results are impressive, but the real story is the pipeline. Museum-quality scan data used to sit behind academic requests. Now it sits on a public website next to a download button. Anyone with a large enough printer can turn those bytes into something that belongs in a natural history museum.
