Multi-material printers create a spaghetti problem. Here is how to tame the tubing and spools on the SnapMaker U1 and Prusa INDX.

Multi-material printing turns your desk into a cable management puzzle. The SnapMaker U1 and Prusa INDX both use swappable toolheads, which means four, five, or six filaments all need a clear path from spool to extruder. If you skip the routing setup, you will spend more time untangling tubes than printing parts.

Keep the spools above the printer

The simplest fix is elevation. Mount your spools on a shelf or a dedicated stand directly above the printer. Gravity keeps the filament from dragging on the table. This also shortens the distance between spool and toolhead, which reduces retraction issues.

Use color-coded PTFE tubing

Standard clear tubing works, but color-coding each spool saves you from loading the wrong filament into the wrong toolhead. SnapMaker sells matching tubes, but any colored PTFE will do. Label both ends with a permanent marker if your tubing looks identical.

Route tubes in parallel loops

Do not let tubes cross each other. Lay them out in neat parallel loops from each spool to its corresponding dock. A small piece of foam or a custom 3D-printed organizer mounted behind the printer keeps the loops separated and eliminates friction between tubes.

Secure the connectors

The collet connectors on the INDX and U1 loosen over time. A quick drop of thread locker on the set screw prevents accidental disconnects mid-print. Just do not over-tighten, or you will strip the threads.

Check for drag after every tool swap

Run a short calibration print after you change the routing setup. Watch each toolhead move across the build plate. If one tube pulls or catches, adjust its path before starting a long job. A snagged tube is one of the fastest ways to ruin a six-hour print.
