Sovol's Boldest Desktop Printer Yet

Shenzhen-based Sovol has pulled the wraps off the M1D, a flagship FDM printer it's pitching as the desktop answer to industrial multi-material production. Announced July 24, 2026, the M1D centers on a proprietary DualX System that Sovol says blends the batch efficiency of Independent Dual Extruders (IDEX) with the material flexibility of a tool-changer — two capabilities that have historically lived in separate, expensive machines.

What Makes DualX Different

Conventional single-nozzle multi-color setups (the AMS-style systems dominating the consumer market) purge enormous amounts of filament during color transitions. Sovol claims DualX sidesteps that almost entirely. Each toolhead runs its own independent heating, cooling, and sealed filament path, and idle heads stay thermally stabilized for instant deployment. The result, per Sovol, is over 90% less material waste and the complete elimination of bulky purge towers.

The mechanical trick is a locking mechanism that performs toolhead swaps in under five seconds across seven distinct color options, with what the company describes as “zero redundant movements.” Ultra-lightweight printheads keep inertia low during high-speed printing, which Sovol argues preserves micro-level repeatability.

Productivity Features for Makers and Print Farms

The M1D ships with a generous 300 × 300 × 350 mm build volume and leans into productivity with dedicated Duplication and Mirror modes — print two identical or symmetrical objects at once to effectively double throughput without extra floor space. That's a direct pitch to small businesses, print-farm operators, and prosumer creators watching their ROI.

Addressing a long-standing pain point, the printer includes a fully automatic calibration system. Precision electronic sensors align the X, Y, and Z axes of both toolheads before a print starts, so multi-color interfaces come out clean without manual fiddling. For high-temperature materials, each head gets an all-metal extruder and a hardened steel nozzle.

Open-Source to the Core

True to Sovol's community-driven heritage, the M1D will ship with open-source Klipper-based firmware configurations and full documentation, letting makers customize, upgrade, and push the platform further. Pre-orders — with detailed pricing and full specs — open on July 28, 2026.
