Sovol's new M1D combines IDEX dual-extrusion with six swappable toolheads, letting one machine print up to seven materials with almost no waste.
There is a fundamental problem with most multi-material 3D printers on the market right now. You pick your poison: either you get a dual-nozzle IDEX system that can print two materials at once but cannot swap tools mid-job, or you get a traditional toolchanger that can swap hotends but only moves one carriage across the bed. Sovol's new M1D is trying to do both at once, and the result is the most unusual consumer printer launch of the year so far.
What the M1D Actually Is
The M1D is, on paper, an IDEX printer. It has two independent carriages that move separately on the X-axis, which means it can print two parts simultaneously in copy mode or produce mirrored parts in mirror mode. That alone covers the standard IDEX use case. What makes the M1D different is what lives on the second carriage. Instead of a fixed second nozzle, that carriage docks a six-position toolchanger that can swap between six pre-loaded toolheads in roughly five seconds.
The fixed carriage carries one toolhead that stays loaded for the duration of a print. The second carriage can pick from six docked tools. That gives the machine access to seven toolheads total: one always mounted, six swapped as needed. Sovol says that architecture can handle up to seven different colors or materials in a single job. The system uses a metal gripping and locking mechanism that Sovol describes as patented, and each docked toolhead pre-heats independently before it is engaged, so there is no cold-start delay when a swap happens.
Where the Waste Goes
Single-nozzle filament changers like the Bambu Lab AMS or Prusa INDX work by purging the old filament through the nozzle before loading the next one. That purge is necessary, but it adds up. Sovol's pitch is that the M1D eliminates almost all purge waste because each toolhead carries its own loaded filament. When the printer swaps tools, it is swapping a ready-to-go nozzle with material already loaded, not an empty hotend that needs to be flushed.
That claim needs real-world testing, because toolchangers have historically introduced their own failure modes: docking misalignment, ooze from idle tools, and slicer complexity. The YouTube reviewers who got early access to pre-production M1D units flagged both the ambition of the concept and the difficulty of making it reliable. One called it one of the most ambitious consumer printers in years, while cautioning that Sovol has never built anything this mechanically complex before.
Build Volume and Motion System
The M1D uses a 300 by 300 by 350 mm build volume when printing with a single toolhead. When both carriages are active, the usable X width drops to 240 mm, because the second carriage needs room to maneuver around the fixed one. Mirror mode uses the full 300 mm width because the second head mirrors the first rather than moving independently. Sovol lists a maximum print speed of 500 mm/s.
The frame is aluminum alloy, and the printer uses six-channel auto-loading filament feeding with run-out detection, nozzle clog detection, and filament tangle detection. There is a five-inch touchscreen on the front. Sovol is shipping the M1D in two configurations: the M1D Essential, which is open-frame and aimed at non-engineering materials, and the M1D Advanced, which ships with a full enclosure and a heated chamber for ABS, ASA, and other high-temperature materials.
Pricing and Availability
The M1D is on Kickstarter right now. The campaign opened on July 28, 2026, and closes on August 27, 2026. Super Early Bird pricing sits at $1,199 for the Essential and $1,499 for the Advanced. Those prices require a $20 VIP deposit that Sovol opened for pre-orders on June 5. The standard MSRP is $1,799 for the Essential and $2,099 for the Advanced once the Kickstarter closes. Shipping is expected to begin in November 2026.
A few things worth flagging before you click back. This is a Kickstarter, not a store. Pledges are charged when the campaign ends whether the printer is ready or not, and delivery windows slip. Sovol has shipped one previous Kickstarter campaign, which is more than many first-time hardware makers can say, but this machine is a significant step up in complexity from anything they have sold before.
The real competition for the M1D is not other budget printers. It is the Bambu Lab U1, which costs roughly the same and offers a proven toolchanging experience with a much more mature slicer and ecosystem. The M1D's argument is that it gives you IDEX on top of toolchanging, which the U1 does not do. Whether that combination works well in practice is the question reviewers are still trying to answer.
The Bottom Line
Sovol is trying something genuinely new with the M1D, and the pricing is aggressive enough to get attention. If the toolchanger docking is reliable and the slicer support matures, the M1D could fill a gap that no current printer addresses: true multi-material IDEX printing at a sub-$1,500 price point. If the docking proves finicky or the software lags, it will be a very expensive lesson in mechanical complexity. Either way, the Kickstarter is live now, and the community will know a lot more about whether this works once the first production units ship in November.
