SprintRay's new FDA-cleared Midas Restore resin lets dentists press ceramic-zirconia crowns, inlays and veneers in a single appointment.

SprintRay has started shipping a new dental material that blurs the line between 3D printing and traditional ceramic restorations. Midas Restore is an FDA-cleared resin filled with more than 75 percent glass ceramic and zirconia, designed to produce crowns, inlays, onlays and veneers inside the dental office in a single visit.

Why Press Instead of Print

Most chairside dental 3D printers use low-viscosity resins that flow easily into a print vat. That limits how much ceramic filler they can carry. SprintRay bypassed that constraint by building a dedicated machine, the Midas Digital Press, that forces thick, highly loaded material through sealed capsules and into the restoration geometry under pressure.

The result is a part dense enough to compete with milled hybrid ceramic. SprintRay reports biaxial flexural strength of 215 MPa, wear resistance five times better than its older SprintRay Ceramic Crown material, and 98 percent gloss retention after 5,000 simulated toothbrush cycles. The translucency parameter of 13.5 sits in the same range as milled lithium disilicate.

The Workflow

A dentist scans the tooth, designs the restoration in software, and presses it from a capsule on the Midas Digital Press. Post-curing takes about four minutes. Polishing to final finish takes two more minutes with standard green zirconia wheels. No glaze oven, no lab lab work, no second appointment.

SprintRay also says the material can be adjusted, built up or repaired in the mouth before bonding. That matters if the margin needs a tweak after try-in.

Cost and Access

Midas Restore ships in five shades: A1, A2, A3, B1 and C2. A three-pack of single-unit capsules costs $135. The material works only with the Midas Digital Press and SprintRay NanoCure, and it requires a prescription in the United States. It holds FDA 510(k) clearance as a Class II device.

For dental offices that already own the press, Midas Restore extends the machine from provisional restorations into definitive ceramic work. That is the pitch: same-day crowns that do not feel like a compromise.
