Stratasys landed a $7.8M defense contract to build real-time quality monitoring into its F3300 and F900 industrial 3D printers.

Stratasys has secured a $7.8 million award from America Makes and the Department of War to develop in-situ quality assurance for its F3300 and F900 industrial FDM platforms. The 24-month project targets a specific bottleneck in defense manufacturing: the slow, expensive post-build inspection that keeps qualified 3D printed parts from reaching production at scale.

Why quality assurance is the current barrier

Right now, manufacturers in regulated industries print a part, then run it through a lengthy inspection and qualification gauntlet before it can fly or fight. That process adds days or weeks to delivery timelines and drives up costs. Stratasys wants to capture the data during the build instead.

The system will monitor the F3300 and F900 platforms in real time, flagging anomalies as they happen and generating the documentation needed to support part qualification. The goal is to let defense manufacturers add additive capacity faster while reducing their reliance on costly post-process checks.

What the award covers

The funding comes through the 2026 America Makes and Department of War Organic Industrial Base Modernization Challenge. Over the next two years, Stratasys will build monitoring capabilities that give manufacturers greater visibility into the printing process. That means better consistency, fewer qualification bottlenecks, and a clearer path to serial production.

John Wilczynski, executive director of America Makes, said the work addresses the critical need to trust additive manufacturing at scale. Rich Garrity, Stratasys's chief business unit officer, framed the project as a way to help manufacturers integrate 3D printing into demanding production environments with less friction.

Defense primes and their supply chains are the immediate beneficiaries. Commercial aerospace and other industrial markets where traceability and process control matter stand to gain as well. If Stratasys delivers, the F3300 and F900 could become more attractive to buyers who need documented, repeatable quality rather than one-off prints with paper trails.

The additive manufacturing industry has spent years proving that 3D printed parts can perform. The next challenge is proving they can perform consistently, batch after batch, with the paperwork defense customers require. This award is a direct bet that in-situ monitoring is the missing piece.
