Stratasys will develop real-time process monitoring for its F3300 and F900 industrial FDM printers under a new America Makes award.

Stratasys has secured $7.8 million in government funding to build in-situ quality assurance capabilities directly into two of its industrial fused deposition modeling platforms. The two-year award comes from the 2026 America Makes and Department of War Organic Industrial Base Modernization Challenge, and it targets the Stratasys F3300 and F900 printers.

The goal is to catch anomalies while a part is printing, not after. Current industrial AM workflows rely heavily on post-build inspection: CT scans, tensile tests, visual checks. That adds time, cost, and bottlenecks to qualification. By shifting some of that inspection inside the build chamber, Stratasys hopes to shorten the path from prototype to production.

The system will monitor material flow, temperature stability, and layer adhesion in real time. The resulting data is meant to help manufacturers tighten process windows, reduce scrap rates, and build the documentation that defense and aerospace customers demand for certified parts.

For Stratasys, this is a defensive move as much as an innovation one. Competitors including Markforged and Desktop Metal have pushed real-time monitoring as a differentiator. Winning a government award removes some of the R&D risk and gives the project a clear customer: the US defense industrial base, which is trying to scale additive manufacturing for spare parts and low-rate production.

The funding also signals that Washington continues to treat AM quality standards as a supply chain security issue. America Makes has consistently funded projects that move additive manufacturing from demonstration to production, and in-situ monitoring is one of the technical gaps that has kept many programs in pilot status.
