A new video compares Stratasys Fortus 450MC PC-ABS parts against Bambu Lab H2D and Prusa Core One prints using Polymaker filament.

The test setup

My Tech Fun printed the same PC-ABS parts on three machines: a Stratasys Fortus 450MC with genuine Stratasys PC-ABS, a Bambu Lab H2D with Polymaker PC-ABS, and a Prusa Core One L also loaded with Polymaker. The goal was to see whether desktop hardware and third-party filament can close the gap with industrial-grade equipment.

The results are closer than you might expect. Stratasys still wins on dimensional accuracy and surface finish, but the desktop machines are producing functional parts that cost a fraction to produce.

Where desktop printers fall short

The biggest difference shows up in layer adhesion and inter-layer bonding. Stratasys's heated chamber and controlled build environment give it a consistent advantage, especially on tall, thin walls. The Fortus 450MC also handles support material automatically, which matters for complex geometries.

Print speed is another area where industrial still leads. The Fortus runs at sustained speeds that would challenge most desktop machines, and it does so without the calibration drift that comes with hotter, faster consumer prints.

Where the Bambu H2D and Prusa Core One win

Cost per part is where the desktop machines dominate. Polymaker PC-ABS filament costs roughly one-tenth of Stratasys's branded material. The Bambu H2D and Prusa Core One also offer faster iteration: you can tweak settings and reprint within hours instead of scheduling a production run days in advance.

The Prusa Core One's INDX multi-material toolhead adds another advantage. You can print supports in a soluble material or switch between rigid and flexible filaments in the same job. The Stratasys system handles support too, but at a much higher material cost.

The bottom line

If you need aerospace-certified parts or production runs with zero tolerance for variation, Stratasys still earns its premium. But for prototyping, functional testing, and low-volume production, the Bambu H2D and Prusa Core One with Polymaker PC-ABS are legitimate alternatives. The gap has narrowed enough that desktop printers deserve serious consideration for industrial materials.
