TPU delivers flexible, tough parts, but only with the right settings. Here's how to kill stringing and jams for clean flexible prints.

Why TPU is both loved and feared

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the filament you reach for when a part needs to flex, grip, dampen vibration, or absorb impact. It is also the material that exposes every weak spot in your setup: a sloppy filament path, a wet spool, or lazy slicer defaults will all show up as stringing, blobs, or a jammed extruder. The good news is that most TPU failures are systematic, not mysterious — fix the system and the prints clean up fast.

Start dry: TPU is thirsty

Like Nylon, TPU is hygroscopic and arrives damp more often than not. Moisture turns into steam inside the hotend, causing popping, bubbly surfaces, and weak layer adhesion. Dry the spool at around 45–50 °C for 4–6 hours before printing, and store it with desiccant afterward. If your first layer looks foamy, drying is step one — not retraction tweaks.

Feeding matters more than you think

TPU's squishiness lets it buckle and bind if the path to the extruder is anything but straight and snug. Use a direct-drive extruder where possible; if you are on a Bowden setup, slow down and keep the tube as short as you can. Add a filament guide so the spool pulls cleanly, and avoid over-tightening the idler — too much pinch flattens the filament and causes slipping.

Retraction: less is more

This is where most people go wrong. High retraction on flexible filament just gives it somewhere to squish and jam. Try retraction distance of 0.5–2 mm on direct drive (near zero on some setups) and keep retract speed low, around 20–30 mm/s. If you still see strings, lower temperature and travel speed before you crank retraction.

Slow down and let it lay down

TPU prints best when rushed least. Aim for 20–40 mm/s print speed with reduced acceleration and jerk. Higher speeds smear and cause corner artifacts. A slightly higher-than-usual flow (around 105–110%) can help fill flexible layers consistently.

Temperature and cooling

Most TPU lands around 210–230 °C at the hotend and 40–60 °C on the bed (PEI or textured sheets work well with a light glue stick if needed). Use minimal part cooling — too much fan on the first layers causes poor adhesion and warping; ramp it up only after the base is solid.
