British cyclists, swimmers, and para-athletes are using 3D-printed parts at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, and the gains are real.
The additive manufacturing industry is no longer confined to prototyping labs. At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, British athletes are competing with equipment that would not exist without 3D printing. Additive Manufacturing UK (AMUK) confirmed that the technology is now delivering performance gains at the margins that decide medals.
Cycling and Formula 1 crossover
British cycling programs have been using additively manufactured cranks, seatposts, handlebars, and fittings for years. The payoff is measurable: better stiffness, improved aerodynamics, and rider-specific fit. Formula 1 teams rely on the same process for aerodynamic development and race-pace tooling. The techniques developed on the track then migrate to other sports.
Para-sport and custom geometry
The most impactful applications appear in para-sport. Additive manufacturing makes it possible to design equipment around an athlete's exact anatomy rather than around the limitations of a mold or cutting tool. Member company 76 Additive designed a combined grip and computer mount for British paratriathlete Claire Cashmore at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The same company produced lattice-structured aerodynamic handlebars for Drag2Zero, used by Great Britain's Olympic gold medal-winning triathlon mixed relay team.
Rob Johnson, founder of 76 Additive, said the workflow is now practical production, not experimental. We can refine fit, stiffness, weight, and function rapidly, then manufacture the finished component repeatably. That is not novelty 3D printing. It is practical, high-performance production.
Swimming and hydrodynamics
AMUK also highlighted the EZ Gains Hydroglide swimming aid. Made using Multi Jet Fusion nylon and Carbon Digital Light Synthesis elastomer lattice components, it represents another instance where 3D printing created a geometry that conventional manufacturing simply could not replicate affordably.
What it means for UK manufacturing
Josh Dugdale, Head of AMUK, argued that elite sport makes the benefits of additive manufacturing visible, but the industrial opportunity is much larger. When fractions of a second matter, engineers need lighter parts, faster design iteration, and geometries conventional manufacturing cannot easily deliver. Those same capabilities are now strengthening production, supply chains, and innovation across UK industry.
Britain's medal chances at Glasgow 2026 are backed by factories, software, and materials science as much as by training. The difference between gold and fourth place can be measured in grams, drag coefficients, and milliseconds. This week, some of those margins were made with plastic and powder, layer by layer.
