A partnership between the UK Ministry of Defence and Alloyed delivered a flight-ready engine in under seven months.

The UK Ministry of Defence and Oxford-based start-up Alloyed have put a new turbojet engine through flight testing in under seven months. That is from initial concept to actual flight. The programme establishes a sovereign UK propulsion capability spanning drones through to larger aircraft.

Digital engineering, faster cycles

The engine family covers a thrust range from 30 newtons to 2,000 newtons. A 300N-class variant has already completed flight testing and entered serial production in the UK. The 1,100N-class model moved from first concept to flight-ready status in less than seven months.

Alloyed and MOD used digital design and manufacturing methods throughout. A modular architecture lets new variants and improvements enter production without extensive redesign. The UK Ministry of Defence says this approach lets propulsion systems move from design to assessment to production in months rather than years.

Jobs and supply chains

The programme has created more than 60 highly skilled UK jobs so far, with 45 more expected over the next year as production scales. It is led by MOD's Strategic Capabilities Office and combines government investment with matched funding from Alloyed.

The co-investment model is deliberate. It accelerates development while keeping capability and intellectual property domestic. The Ministry of Defence notes the work supports the Strategic Defence Review by reducing reliance on overseas supply chains for critical propulsion technology.

What comes next

A family of engines is now available for different platform sizes. The modular design means future thrust variants can be introduced quickly. Export potential and allied demand for sovereign propulsion solutions are part of the long-term picture. The UK now has a domestic path from concept to tested engine that does not depend on foreign suppliers.
