The US filament map looks crowded until you read the corrections. Here is who is really extruding spools on American soil.

The map that started the argument

3Dnatives recently tried to map every company extruding 3D printing filament on US soil. It is a useful exercise, and the comments underneath it are even more useful. Within hours, readers were correcting the list: one name was defunct, another had quietly exited the business, and a well known nylon brand had been pulled under when its resin supplier left.

That gap between the published map and the lived reality is the real story. If you want to buy American-made filament, the field is smaller and shakier than a quick directory search suggests.

Who is still making it

A handful of names show up again and again, and most are still shipping spools.

3DXTECH (Michigan)

3DXTECH builds the high-temperature end of the market: PEEK, PEKK, PEI, and other engineering polymers that most desktop machines cannot even print. If a US shop is making aerospace-grade filament, this is one of the places doing it.

Proto-pasta (Vancouver, Washington)

Proto-pasta made its name on composites: PLA loaded with iron, copper, steel, carbon fiber, and stranger blends. The prints come off the bed looking like grey plastic and finish like metal after a little sanding and polish. It is the reference point for the whole metal-fill category.

3D-Fuel (Fargo, North Dakota)

3D-Fuel sells general-purpose PLA and PETG plus beginner-friendly bundles, and as of the correction thread its staff were posting from inside the Fargo extrusion line. Small, but real and operating.

MatterHackers (California)

MatterHackers is best known as a reseller, but its Quantum house brand is filament it sells under its own name from Orange County. For a hobbyist wanting a US-linked spool without hunting a specialist, it is the easy button.

Push Plastic (Kansas)

Push Plastic extrudes standard PLA and PETG in the Midwest and pitches itself on price and availability. Nothing exotic, just steady commodity spools made domestically.

The ones that stumbled

The corrections matter as much as the keepers. Essentium, once a touted US filament and printer name, is out of business. Braskem walked away from filament entirely, and according to readers that exit dragged Taulman3D down with it. Taulman was a longtime favorite for tough nylons, so its disappearance stings.

Two more specialized names surfaced in the thread: Bolson Materials in Brasil, Indiana, making ABS and ASA, and Pivot AM in Pella, Iowa, running PC, PCABS, and Ultem grades. These are engineering-resin shops, not hobby PLAs, but they round out the genuine US capacity.

Why this matters right now

Tariffs, reshoring talk, and supply-chain nerves have made 'made in the USA' a selling point on filament spools. The catch is that very little of the commodity PLA and PETG on American shelves is actually extruded here. The US makers tend to live at the edges: high-temp engineering polymers, composites, and small regional shops.

If you want domestic filament, expect to pay for it and to shop by name, not by assumption. The map is a starting point. The comment section is the truth.
