A Firestorm Labs containerized microfactory aboard the USS Essex printed 12 drones and more than 1,000 parts while underway at RIMPAC 2026.

A factory on the flight deck

During its voyage to RIMPAC 2026, the USS Essex deployed with something it had never carried before: a containerized microfactory operated by Firestorm Labs. Using the company's xCell system, the crew produced more than 1,000 individual parts and assembled 12 Squall first-person-view drones while the ship was underway. They also printed repair components for the ship itself, all through Sea State 5 conditions.

The Essex did not sail with a stockpile of complete drones. It sailed with the ability to build them.

Why distributed mass matters

The Pentagon's Replicator initiative, launched in 2023, made the case for producing large numbers of affordable, attritable autonomous systems. Its successors, including Low-Cost Containerized Munitions and Ground-Based Affordable Mass, have institutionalized that thinking. The FY2027 budget request proposes over $130 billion for programs that operationalize distributed mass.

The logic is simple. A battlefield saturated with cheap autonomous systems can overwhelm a force built around a small number of expensive platforms. The side that can replace, adapt, or expand its drone fleet faster holds the advantage.

Compressing the supply chain

Historically, a soldier who spotted a tactical need waited years for a new piece of equipment. The request moved through operational commands, acquisition offices, contractors, and test organizations before anything reached the front line.

A containerized 3D production line sitting on the ship cuts that chain to hours. If a drone needs a modified component or a new sensor mount, the design can be updated and printed in theater. That is the real shift: the factory is no longer in a rear-echelon depot. It is on the front line.

Firestorm Labs' xCell system is not a laboratory experiment. It is a production line that turned the Essex into an organic manufacturing platform during a live exercise. Other navies are watching, and they will want the same flexibility.
