The honest answer: almost anything small
New owners usually start with a benchy boat or a keychain, then wonder what comes next. The short version is that if you can draw it, and it fits on the bed, you can probably print it. The interesting part is where 3D printing actually earns its keep.
Fix-it parts around the house
The most common real use is replacement bits. A broken dishwasher bracket, a worn vacuum clip, a missing drawer stop: these are exactly the parts that are cheap to print and annoying to source. Measure the original, model a copy, print it in PETG, and you skip a two-week wait for a $3 component.
For anything under mechanical stress, reach for PETG or ABS rather than PLA. PLA is fine for a shelf trinket but it creeps and softens near hot water.

Makers print custom screwdriver holders, cable clips, drill guides, and assembly jigs. A good jig turns a fiddly ten-minute job into a thirty-second one. Shops with a printer on the bench tend to design small aids faster than they can order them.

Tabletop gamers print miniatures and terrain. Cosplayers print armor and prop pieces, then fill and paint them. This is where resin printers shine: an SLA or LCD machine lays down detail that an FDM nozzle simply cannot match, at the cost of messier post-processing.
Wearables and medical aids
At the serious end, clinicians print surgical guides, braces, and prosthetic sockets tailored to one patient. That is not a weekend project, but it shows the ceiling of what the technology does. Closer to home, people print phone stands, ear savers, and custom watch bands.
Industrial and end-use parts
Factories use the same layer-by-layer idea to build jigs, fixtures, and low-volume production parts in metal and high-temp plastic. Aerospace and medical are the headline cases, but the pattern is the same as your broken dishwasher clip, just with stricter material specs.
Where it still struggles
3D printing is poor at large flat areas, weak on parts that take heavy load, and slow for anything you need by the thousand. Injection molding still wins on cost at scale. Treat the printer as a short-run and one-off tool, and it pays for itself quickly.
Getting started
Pick one annoying problem in your home and solve it. A phone stand, a cable tidy, a replacement knob: small wins teach the workflow faster than an ambitious multi-part project. From there the list of things you can make grows on its own.
