A bad first layer ruins the whole print. These are the settings and habits that fix adhesion, gaps, and warping before they start.
The first layer decides the whole print
Most failed prints do not fail at hour three. They fail in the first five minutes, on a layer you can see from across the room. Get the base right and the rest of the print tends to take care of itself. Get it wrong and you get warping, gaps, blobs, and a part that pops off halfway through.
This is not glamorous work, but it is the most useful skill you can learn. Here is how to fix the first layer, starting with the usual suspects.
1. Level the bed and tune the Z offset
If your nozzle sits too far from the bed, the filament never squishes into the surface and the lines pull apart. Too close, and you scrape the bed or starve the extruder. The fix is the Z offset, and on most modern printers you can live-adjust it while the first layer goes down.
A good test is a single-layer square. Watch the lines. They should touch but not overlap into a shiny smear. Small corrections here pay off on every print after.
2. Clean the bed like it owes you money
Oils from your fingers are the silent killer of adhesion. A quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol before each print removes the film that causes corners to lift. Textured PEI needs less help than glass, but it still gathers dust and fingerprints.
Do not skip this step just because the bed looks clean. It rarely is.
3. Get the first-layer temperature right
A hotter first layer improves squish and bonding. Bumping the initial bed and nozzle temperature by 5 to 10 degrees over the rest of the print helps tricky materials like PETG and ABS hold down. Just remember to drop back to normal for the remaining layers, or you will cook fine details.
4. Slow the first layer down
Speed is the enemy of a clean base. Drop the first-layer speed to 20 to 30 percent of normal. The extruder has time to lay an even bead, and you get a chance to spot trouble before the printer races ahead. It costs you a minute. It saves you an hour of reprinting.
5. Pick the right surface for the material
PLA loves a clean textured PEI sheet. PETG sticks almost too well and benefits from a release agent like glue stick so you do not tear the sheet. ABS and ASA want an enclosure and a heated chamber, or the edges curl no matter what you do.
Match the bed to the plastic and half your adhesion problems disappear.
The habit that beats every trick
Watch the first layer. Every time. Do not walk away the second the print starts. The 30 seconds it takes to confirm a clean, even base is the difference between a shelf of successes and a bin of failed blobs.
Get this right and the rest of 3D printing gets a lot less frustrating.
