Building a Plane on an Apartment Floor
Most people use their living room for watching TV or maybe assembling furniture. Evan, the maker behind the YouTube channel Error by Human, is using his to build a flyable airplane. Not a model or a drone, but a full Part 103 ultralight that he hopes to actually fly.
The project started with five months of design work before the first print started. Since then, Evan has been churning out parts on a consumer 3D printer, one section at a time. The fuselage is already complete, and he is moving through the center and rear sections methodically.
Why Build an Airplane in an Apartment?
Part 103 ultralights are among the simplest flying machines in the sky. No license, no medical certificate, just a machine light enough and slow enough to fall under a special FAA category. That simplicity is the point. If Evan can prove a Part 103 can be built from 3D-printed parts in a small apartment, he is making a statement about what is possible with accessible tools.
The build is not without engineering compromises. Carbon fiber skins wrapped around foam cores will reinforce the structure. Tolerances are tight, and Evan is sanding edges and test-fitting joints as he goes. There is no blueprint for this exact configuration, so he is working through problems as they appear.
A Working Aircraft, Not a Prototype
The goal is not a static display piece. Evan intends to fly this machine. The current build is already more than 13 feet tall and will likely exceed 16 feet when finished. That is a serious object to be constructing indoors.
For now, the project is moving slowly and deliberately. Evan says he wants to take it step by step, which is sensible for something that will eventually have a person strapped to the top.
