Metal 3D printing pioneer 3DEO has filed for insolvency. Its 19 issued patents and 10 pending applications are up for sale with a deadline of August 12.

3DEO, the Torrance, California metal 3D printing company that built its reputation on the Intelligent Layering process, has filed for insolvency and put its entire intellectual property portfolio up for auction.

The sale covers 19 issued patents and 10 pending patent applications, along with trade secrets, engineering documentation, and software. A separate auction for physical machinery runs on BidSpotter.com. Prospective buyers must first clear U.S. export control requirements and sign a non-disclosure agreement before bidding.

Brian Testo Associates is handling the IP sale. Qualified overbids are due August 12 at 12:00 p.m. PST. If qualifying bids come in, a live Zoom auction is scheduled for August 14.

From Growth to Insolvency

3DEO posted triple-digit revenue growth in 2020 and was seen as one of the more promising metal AM entrants focused on production. The company's binder-jetting approach targeted high-volume metal parts at costs competitive with traditional manufacturing.

The decline appears tied to the broader capital squeeze hitting metal AM startups. Companies that raised heavily during the 2020-2022 boom have faced a harsh market as venture funding tightened and customers grew cautious about production commitments. 3DEO is not the first to collapse under that pressure.

What the Auction Means for the Industry

If a larger metal AM player or strategic buyer acquires the patents, the technology could live on under new ownership. The Intelligent Layering process and associated software might be folded into an existing production platform. That would be the best outcome for customers already running 3DEO systems.

The alternative is that the patents sit unused or get broken up. Either way, the August 14 auction will reveal whether anyone sees enough value in 3DEO's IP to keep it alive.
