Bambu Lab's A2L now has an optional cutting module that turns the printer into a low-cost plotter for cardboard and thin materials.

The A2L Adds a Cutting Module

Bambu Lab's A2L already has a lot going for it. Large build volume, solid print quality, and a reasonable price. But now there's a new accessory that makes it do something most FDM printers cannot: cut.

The Cutting Upgrade Kit is a bolt-on module that replaces the toolhead. It mounts a small rotary cutter and drag knife for flat materials like cardboard, kraft paper, and thin leather. Installation takes about ten minutes. No soldering, no firmware changes. You click the module into place and select the cutting profile in Bambu Studio.

How It Performs

Notebookcheck tested the module on corrugated cardboard and sticker vinyl. The results were impressive for a consumer-grade add-on. The drag knife handled curves cleanly. The rotary cutter sliced through multiple layers of cardboard without bogging down. Precision was within the tolerances you'd expect from a craft plotter costing twice as much.

The module does have limits. It is not a CNC mill. Do not expect to cut acrylic or hardwood. The travel speed is slower than a dedicated plotter. And the cutting area is limited to the A2L's 256 x 256 mm bed. But for a quick way to make packaging prototypes, stickers, or paper models without switching machines, it works.

Should You Buy It?

The upgrade costs less than many people spend on filament in a year. If you already own an A2L and you make things that involve flat materials, the kit pays for itself fast. If you only print in plastic, save your money.

The A2L itself starts at $469 without the AMS Lite and $569 with it. The cutting module is sold separately. Bambu Lab is positioning the A2L as a multi-tool for makers. This module makes that claim more believable.

Bottom line: The cutting upgrade is not a gimmick. It is a practical addition that extends the A2L's usefulness beyond plastic extrusion. Makers who cut materials as part of their workflow should take a close look.
