The X2D replaces the X1 Carbon with dual nozzles, a 65C heated chamber and 70% less purge waste, starting at $649.

The Bambu Lab X2D is the real successor to the X1 Carbon, and it is also the cheapest dual-extrusion FDM printer that actually works for daily use. At $649 for the base model and $899 with the AMS, it undercuts the original X1 Carbon launch price by hundreds of dollars while adding a second extruder and a heated chamber that opens up ABS, ASA and PA without an enclosure mod.

This is not an IDEX printer. Both nozzles share one X-carriage. What makes the X2D different from a standard single-nozzle machine is the nozzle lifter: when the secondary extruder is idle, a small motor lifts it off the print plane and a wiper cleans it before it descends again. That eliminates the ooze problem that plagues cheap multi-extruder setups.

What improves over the X1 Carbon

Purge waste drops by roughly 70 percent. On the X1C with AMS, a six-color print can waste 80 grams or more of filament on purge towers. On the X2D, the secondary nozzle holds a different material directly, so the waste drops to 10 to 12 grams per color change. That is a real difference if you print functional parts in two materials regularly.

Dynamic Flow Calibration is new. The X2D monitors extruder motor current, hotend temperature, nozzle pressure and filament feed in real time, then adjusts the extrusion multiplier mid-print. A no-name PETG roll that needed a 0.94 multiplier on the X1C printed clean walls on the X2D with no per-spool tuning. For people buying filament from random Amazon sellers, that feature alone pays for the upgrade.

The 65C heated chamber removes the enclosure guesswork. ABS and ASA warp badly on open-frame printers. The X2D holds 65C consistently, so large ABS parts finish without the corner lifting that kills prints on machines without enclosures. PA-CF also prints properly -- strong layer adhesion, no inter-layer delamination on tall geometry.

Print speed is still X1C-level. The 1,000 mm/s top speed is a mechanical limit, not a practical target. Real-world Speed-mode prints land within plus or minus 5 percent of X1C times. That is fine. The X1C was already faster than anything in its price class. The X2D needed more capability, not more speed claims.

Backwards compatibility is genuine. Existing AMS units, build plates and Bambu Studio profiles all work without changes. X1C owners can swap to X2Ds one at a time without retooling their workflow.

Where it falls short

The secondary extruder is Bowden-fed. That means flexible filaments like TPU and abrasive materials like carbon fiber must run on the primary direct-drive nozzle only. The secondary side tops out at 200 mm/s and is unreliable with flexible filaments. If you want symmetric dual-extrusion with flexibles, the H2D is the answer at $1,899.

The nozzle lifter is a new failure surface. Community reports on the Bambu Lab subreddit describe nozzle-lifter misalignment during multi-material prints, where an inactive nozzle can drag across the print mid-swap. The camera-based first-layer check catches some issues before printing starts, but a mid-print misalignment is still a real risk. This is a brand-new mechanism, and new mechanisms develop failure modes that established designs do not have.

Bambu Connect lock-in keeps tightening. Officially supported third-party slicers like OrcaSlicer work, but new features land in Bambu Studio first by six to 12 months. If open firmware is a priority, the Prusa Core One and Voron 2.4 remain the better choices. If you want to print this weekend, the X2D ships and works.

AMS still does not handle TPU or wet PETG well. That is an inherited problem, not new. Run TPU from the side feeder. Dry your PETG.

PVA support material is expensive. First-party PVA costs around $60 per kilogram, four to five times the cost of regular PLA. It also absorbs moisture faster than any other consumer filament. You will print fewer soluble-support jobs than the dual-extrusion marketing implies.

Pricing and alternatives

The X2D Combo at $899 includes the AMS and a spool of Bambu PLA Basic. The X1C launched at $1,449 for the Combo on Kickstarter in 2022. Even adjusting for inflation, the X2D Combo is roughly 38 percent cheaper. It competes directly with the Prusa Core One at $1,099, the Creality K2 Plus at $1,499 and the Bambu Lab H2D at $1,899.

For single-material PLA and PETG hobby printing, the Bambu A1 Mini is still the better value. The X2D is for users who already understand purge towers and want to spend less time watching filament waste.

The bottom line

The X2D is the highest-value FDM printer launch of 2026 so far. Dual extrusion is not a gimmick at this price. Purge waste drops dramatically, the heated chamber makes engineering plastics printable without modifications, and Dynamic Flow Calibration removes the per-spool tuning burden. Print quality matches the X1C. Buy the Combo for $899. The base $649 model is a false economy because the AMS is the feature that actually delivers on multi-material.

Skip it if you only print single-material PLA. Skip it if you need the H2D's larger build volume or true symmetric dual-extrusion. For everyone else who already owns a 3D printer and wants to do more with it, the X2D is the logical next step.
