Prusa updated its budget Buddy3D PLA line with NFC spool tagging. A 1kg spool costs 14.49 euros.

Prusa Research has started shipping its budget-friendly Buddy3D PLA filament with a new trick: NFC tagging. Starting in July 2026, every Buddy3D spool includes a fully rewritable NFC tag built on the OpenPrintTag standard. The tag stores material data that compatible Prusa printers can read automatically, pulling in the right temperature and retraction settings without manual entry.

Buddy3D fills the gap between Prusa's premium Prusament line and the no-name spools many users buy to save money. The filament is manufactured in European facilities under Prusa's quality supervision, with a diameter tolerance of 0.04mm. The new NFC tag makes the budget option smarter. Users can tap the spool against a supported printer to load profiles instantly.

The OpenPrintTag standard itself is open source. That means third-party slicers and printer makers can adopt it without licensing fees. Prusa first introduced OpenPrintTag on its premium Prusament spools in late 2025. Rolling it out to Buddy3D brings smart spool functionality to the entry-level price tier.

A 1kg spool of Buddy3D PLA costs 14.49 euros. The price puts it well below Prusament, which typically runs around 25 to 30 euros per kilogram depending on material type. For makers who print large parts or run long tests, the savings add up.

Early community feedback on Buddy3D has been mixed. Some Reddit users report winding issues and packaging problems compared to Prusament. Others say print quality is solid for the price. The NFC integration appears to be a genuine quality-of-life improvement, especially for anyone running multiple filament types on the same printer.

Prusa's move sends a signal across the budget filament market. If NFC tagging becomes expected even at 14 euros, competitors will have to follow or look dated. For now, Buddy3D with OpenPrintTag is the cheapest way to get automatic spool recognition in the Prusa ecosystem.
