From unboxing to your first completed layer on the Sovol M1D, here are the setup steps that actually determine whether the first print succeeds.
Unpack and Level Check
The M1D ships mostly assembled, but do not skip the bed level check before loading filament. The DualX gantry sits square from the factory in most cases, but a quick manual probe at four corners eliminates a whole class of failed first layers.
Inspect the Toolhead
Look at the nozzles. The M1D uses a tool-changing system, and the active nozzle should seat fully without wobble. If a nozzle sits even slightly off-center, swap it before you start. A bad first nozzle wastes more filament than the replacement costs.
Load Filament
Feed the dry filament through the loader until you see plastic at the nozzle tip. Purge a short line onto the bed edge to confirm flow. If the extrusion looks thin or inconsistent, check the temperature. Most PLA profiles for the M1D run between 200C and 215C at the nozzle, with the bed around 60C.
Run Auto Calibration
The M1D has an automatic bed level and flow calibration routine. Let it finish without interruption. Do not cancel early to save time. A partial calibration leaves mesh data that produces inconsistent squish across the bed.
Slice in OrcaSlicer
Import the printer profile for the M1D from the Sovol GitHub or community repository. Set the process profile to 0.2mm layer height for the first test. Use a brim or skirt, not a raft. The M1D bed adhesion is reliable without a raft, and a raft wastes time and material on the first print.
Preview Before Printing
Open the preview in OrcaSlicer. Look for the first layer coverage and travel moves. If the brim does not surround the part, fix the offset before sending the job to the printer.
Watch the First Layer
Stay near the printer for the first few minutes. A bad first layer is obvious within the first two layers. If the plastic does not stick, pause and adjust the Z offset before the print continues. It takes thirty seconds and saves a two-hour failure.
Troubleshoot Quickly
Stringing, under-extrusion, and layer shifting each have simple causes on the M1D. Dry your filament if you see popping during extrusion. Reduce retraction distance if you see stringing. Tighten belts if you see layer shifting on X or Y.
